For Averbuch, basic materials such as wood, stone and metal are storytellers full of associations and memories. Averbuch usually starts by making sketches with a specific idea in mind, and goes on repeating these drawings until the procedure becomes more rational. The object emerges, in both its material substance and its structural dimensions. The sculptures are personal studies of his creative thinking. He formulates his very own symbols, that, like pictograms, are intuitively understood by many. Ilan Averbuch was born in Tel Aviv in 1953 and studied in London and then New York, where he lives.
