NICOLA HICKS
Recovered Memory

1996-97. Bronze

Born in 1960, Nicola Hicks already began making her expressive animal sculptures during her time at the Royal College of Art in London – an unusual artistic position in the 1980s. Their bodies, modelled in plaster and straw, appear fragile and alive though cast into durable bronze – thus making the sense of psychological vulnerability palpable, not just metaphorical. Animals are prolific in myths and fairy-tales. In them we find old wisdom about the human or, as the artist puts it, “Properties to which our consciousness has often lost access.”
