A FARM SINCE
MEDIEVAL TIMES

As early as the 12th century, several sites were cleared for farming in the surroundings of Schoenthal Monastery – Wald, Chilchzimmer and Spittel. Timber felling and ore mining were another source of revenue. The Froburg family also presented the village of Bennwil to the monastery as a gift; the monastery’s more than 500-year-old baptismal font is to be found there today.

Today Kloster Schönthal owns land covering a total of 100 hectares. The leaseholder of the Demeter enterprise is the limited liability company Hofgut Schönthal; Jris Rüdlinger, Josua Weniger and Kristin Metzner are the managers.

Since 2015, biodiversity and species diversity has been pursued on this land. The project entitled Kulturlandschaft Kloster Schönthel is being supervised and promoted by a renowned group of experts from the landscape and nature conservation sector.
